  • ROSIE SANDERS CREATES UNIQUE SUITE OF NEOCLASSICAL COUTURE FROM ENDANGERED TROPICAL HARDWOOD 'AFROMOSIA'

ROSIE SANDERS has created a unique hand carved statement necklace made from reclaimed Afromosia, a rare and endangered tropical hardwood, that is to be exhibited at Goldsmiths Hall in London as part of the Goldsmiths Craft & Design Awards exhibition from the 3rd - 6th of March 2015.

The necklace exhibited is part of a new suite of entirely bespoke couture pieces made using reclaimed Afromosia cut from timbers of an old 1950’s desk that build on her first signature scroll collection, NAUTILUS I. The central scroll motif is based on the spiral shape found inside the Nautilus shell which embodies the Fibonacci sequence and is a powerful symbol of endurance, renewal and inner beauty revered by ancient civilisations.

Speaking of her new work Rosie explains, "The idea of hidden symbols is part of my fascination with the creation of identity, power and perceptions of inner strength and beauty which resonate with today's urban dames. The use of reclaimed Afromosia wood which was cut from a 1950's office desk due for landfill innately reflects this idea of renewal and endurance, hence my fascination with the renaissance, of rebirth through the resurrection and reworking of materials and meaning."

This exquisite set of one off designs underscores Rosie's vision of Neoclassical Couture; neoclassically inspired luxury jewellery with a contemporary feminine edge that celebrates enduring symbols of opulence, femininity and power. ROSIE SANDERS is extremely proud to exhibit alongside the UK’s finest craftsmen and women, including Jacques Cartier Award winners, which makes it the perfect location to launch her unique one off couture creations.

The culmination of the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council’s annual competition takes centre stage at Goldsmiths’ Hall in late February/early March each year. Alongside the formal prize giving, held in the magnificent Livery Hall, an exhibition of all the award winning entries are displayed in the Exhibition Room and Foyer of Goldsmiths’ Hall. Other selected entrants’ work is also exhibited alongside the prize winners and collectively; this is an excellent representation of the standard, variety and ethos of work currently being made in industry and education.
